Tonight I had the chance to hear Professor Simon from Columbia Law School speak about the ethical issues of being a lawyer. It turns out his wife represents Google among other clients. It seems that they did not create an email system in China because they knew if they did they might have to give names to the Chinese authorities. Perhaps while not totally "clean" Google is "cleaner" then some of its fellow companies when it comes to doing business in China.
